Meet the Press: 1963 March on Washington

On August 25, 1963, Meet the Press interviewed Roy Wilkins, as they described, “secretary of part of the oldest negro organization, the NAACP.”

“Doctor King was President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and has become a symbol of nonviolence in the Civil Rights Movement.”

It’s very strange to hear the words negro on television. I’ve been watching Meets the Press since I was a tot. My first memory was a rebroadcast of the Oliver North Scandal.

Wilkins gets pressed on how they think “negros” will be unruly and violent when marching through Washington. History shows us something completely different. In fact, most of the video is continuous questioning on how Wilkins and Luther can completely be sure there will not be riots and fighting. Unsurprisingly, not many questions went into why the marches were taking place. An interesting look from fifty years ago.
