Why Apple’s AirPower Mat is Dead Dead Dead

If this had been Samsung, the world would be burning. If LG, Motorola, or Sony the criticism would instantly be, “they’re no Apple.”

But it was The Fruit.

No one puts a product on packaging until it reaches a certain level of certainty. This mat is already plastered on airpod and phone boxes. Apple is not in the business of mistakes. Simply put, they can’t afford it. Samsung has a two thousand dollar flip phone that will get iPhone user’s to switch. Google’s Pixel has a low light camera that’s unbeatable and LG and Xiaomi have foreign marketshare.

Wireless charging mats have been done before, but mostly in a more structured way. Phones to the left. Airpods top right. Watches on the bottom. The reason for this is it makes it easier charge devices separately but sync through one device. Charging a device at the wrong voltage is hardware murder. Apple’s mat was marketed where you could through down a device anywhere and it would charge. But the multi-coil features tended to overheat. They could have released a version one that wasn’t as sophisticated, but they went all in.

Their cards are all on the table now. Samsung came out with a foldable phone that wasn’t the one originally scheduled for release. The initial version was thinner, lighter. But Samsung knew if they couldn’t get the lighter display produced at scale, they would have to go to the earlier version. And they did. No pushbacks allowed. Apple’s R&D is now public.

Apple might think a Friday night data dump will at least salvage their stock price- but in the age of the internet, no story ever sleeps. Their only prayer is a Trump tweet.
