A Different World Reunion

One of the greatest shows ever created. If was funny, it was sweet, and it always had those little life lessons to persuade us all to be better people. At first it was a spin off for Denise Huxtable.

When the actress, Lisa Bonet, got pregnant in real life, the show was rewritten around her classmates. That same year, when Debbie Allen was brought in to direct, she focus more on Hillman being a historic African American college.

I never watched it as a black comedy, same way I never watched Martin as a black comedy. All I saw was some of the best writing on television. It was sugary, like the The Cosby Show, with a kick of cinnamon.

It had our resident nerd, Dwayne Wayne, Ron the comedian, Kim the hard working future doctor, Whitley the prom queen, Freddie our activist, and Walter and Jaleesa our parental resident advisers.

The wedding episode gave us all what we wanted. We wanted our Whitley and Dwayne together- but it wasn’t their first engagement. The first time Dwayne wasn’t ready. They were young and hadn’t been dating that long. He was flirting with other girls and when Kim found out, she told Whitley, who ended the wedding.

They remained friends- which was something you rarely saw on television. This show taught me that you don’t throw away good people.

One of my favorite lines from part one, is when Dwayne wants to see Whitley one last time before her wedding.

“We just keep hurting each other, over and over,” Whitley says. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I put so much pressure on you.” She is referring to the demise of their first relationship.

“As much as I hate to admit it, it’s exactly what I needed to get my act together. You set a standard, and I couldn’t hang.” Dwayne admits.

Kids, don’t be afraid to hold the people you love to a higher standard. Don’t be afraid to be their Dwayne Wade*.

My favorite line is when Whitley tells Dwayne, “I always thought I’d be dependent on a man. I thought that was just the way it was gonna be. You taught me to depend on myself.”

Tears, tears, tears.

Still one of the best shows ever created. Give me this over anything on E! news network.
