When you’re little, all comic books are not created equal. My dad read Batman, so there was no way I was going to be allowed at eight to dive into that underworld. Forget the scary psychological battle Bruce endures, my dad didn’t want me starting off my superhero adventures with a boy who looses both his parents in an alley. Especially after the Bambi incident my sixth year on this planet.

I started a year before with Archie. Secretly, I wanted to be Veronica and Betty to team up and outdo the boys. It happened about three times.

Then came Wonder Woman. I nearly died. She had the world’s most perfect hair- and they made a tv show after her. Invisible plane and all. I tore through Wonder Woman until I realized I needed another comic book to help fill the gap. Still too young for angsty X-men, fiesty Guardians, and no-way-on-earth for Watchmen. Then came Supergirl. from the 1958 Superman. to be exact. She was a girl like me. She wasn’t a grown up woman. It was fascinating. She could almost be Betty from Archie.

At first, Kara Zor-El was a companion to Superman. Her over-infatuation led to trouble when she accidentally tells Lois Lane Superman’s identity. She goes on to ‘blink’ out of existence instead of death by Kryptonite poisoning. Years later she’s brought back as Kryptonian survivor sent to earth to be with her cousin. Upon her arrival, she is told to fit in and behave, donning button downs, sweaters, and pig tails. At night she goes on secret missions to keep the town safe, and eventually starts helping Clark Kent on his missions.

Right around the time of those unforgettably terrible Supergirl movies, DC killed her off in the comic books as she sacrificed herself to save Superman. She was brought back in 2002, mainly as an add on to their animated tv show.
 
 

In the beginning, she really was an after thought and written carelessly. A dopey girl sidekick. Their second try actually made her a superhero. The dismantling of Kara came with the reviews from the Supergirl movie. Instead of DC having her live in the comics, they wanted and all out end, which came at the worst time for me. So I said goodbye to Kara Zor-El , but I never forget the girl who I grew up with- pig tails and all.

After Supergirl, I made two new friends, Gamora and Rogue.
 
 

As for the CBS show, nothing could be worse than the movies. The actress looks promising. Like always with network tv, how cheesy does it have to get? Just be well written, with good acting, and stay as close to the comic book as you can. They nailed the suit. Round one won versus the Batman film.
